A Day in the Life of a Technical Writer: Christmas Tree Plug

I was going through a video sent by engineering showing how to assemble a product module. The video is my reference for creating the written instructions that will be used in the field. As I was watching, I was amazed how easy it looked to assemble a seemingly complicated module. During the video, the engineer was always saying to use a "Christmas tree plug" to easily attach parts. I searched for the plug in my parts list, but I couldn't find them. So, I asked my best buddy -- Google.

At first I tried the following set of keywords, but Google failed me.

  • christmas tree plug + mechanical part
  • christmas tree plug + engineering

So, to understand it quicker (because I am just impatient) I asked a coworker from engineering about the "Christmas tree plug" and he was amused by my question, but gladly pointed the part name in my parts list and showed me an image sample. He even gave a brief explanation why it is called Christmas tree plug -- "because of the fins that made it look like a Christmas tree." It does look like a Christmas tree!

I still couldn't believe Google failed me, so I searched for christmas tree plug and Google delivered.

And, I realized that simplicity is the key! Just so I wouldn't forget, the technical term for this plug is "push in rivet."
